Ayurveda, like traditional Chinese Medicine, is interested in addressing the root cause of diseases, and not just their symptoms. Relieving symptoms is very important, but medicine is much more profound when used to promote health and longevity, too.

According to Ayurveda , cancer occurs when the subtle aspect of blood (rakta dhatu) becomes impure due to a long term or severe aggravation of one or more of the doshas–vata, pitta, or kapha. This impurity is detected by careful observation of tongue, pulse, signs and symptoms, not lab tests.

This impure blood now locates itself in a region that has a pre-existing weak immunity, as a result of dosha imbalance . One of the functions of blood is transporting prana (the life force in air) to the various cells in the body. And prana contains the subtle energy that empowers cells to perform their normal functions, including division.

It is this combination of impure prana and rakta dhatu at the level of the cells that leads to improper division, known as cancer. If this is not detected at an early stage the impurity spreads to other regions having weak immunity. Thus the cancer spreads to other organs of the body.

An important adjunct to western medical treatment for cancer is the cleansing of the blood and blocked channels (shrotas) of the body with herbal medicines, oil massage, and following a medicinal diet and lifestyle that bring your dosha back into balance while purifying the blood.

At the same time we begin an Ayurvedic rasayana or strengthening and rejuvenating therapy with medicinals like Triphala, Ashwaghanda, and Shatavari. Certain foodstuffs like saffron and black cumin are also part of this therapy.

Although cancer is a difficult disease, Ayurveda can offer a lot of support through its natural treatments. Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine both attempt to restore the health of the person with cancer and not just attack the pathogenic element. This is an approach to cancer treatment that is quickly becoming the norm in oncology centers at this time.
